From reading about where my
classmates get their new I found one thing in common, they all have their own
ways to hear the news but almost all of them are not personally going out
looking for the news. Many of the people would see it on a social media site or
hear it from a friend or family and then check it themselves. I also noticed
that since people in my class are now growing up, they feel like they need to
be more in touch with the news. Back in high school there was no need to be in
touch with the news but now that we are in college we realize that we are so
close to the real world and should know about it. People in my class use
resources such as People Magazine, radio, friends, social media, television,
and The New York Times. One resource that people in the class rarely use is
blogging. This thoroughly surprised me because of how prevalent blogging is in
our society. I also noticed that people would look to different sources when
they are looking for different types of news. If someone is looking for
personal news they will look to Facebook but if they are looking for more of a
national new they will look to the New York Times.
To add to this discussion, Carr
would definitely make the augment that Google is one of the reasons that we are
not reading the news as much. Things such as Google allow people of this
generation to wait to hear about what is going on in the country and the world
and just a simple, “Google Search” will allow them to get a broad understanding
of the topic. Also, Hedges would argue that the news that people read now must
be gripping and entertaining. People are not going to read an article unless it
is gripping, if we lose interest early than individuals will just move on to
the next article.
All in all I have noticed that no matter
what way people get their news, the Internet is becoming the main way
individuals get their current events. Just by getting on the Internet you are
constantly seeing the news whether it is on Facebook, a blog, online magazine,
or the New York Times. There is always some sort of new that comes up online.
I can definitely see how a Google search might seem to be replacing reading the news. This is something that I hadn't really considered. These days, we can definitely get all the information we may want from more informal sources.
