Me with the News
While being at DU I have basically been out of the loop when it comes to the news. Being so focused on school and friends I rarely get time to pay any attention to what is going on in the world. Often I find myself wondering what news events are currently happening but usually I don't look it up because there is always something going on here. Back home when I would come down to eat breakfast my parents would always have the Today Show on so I would get some information about events going on in the country but that is not the case while I have been away at college. The only real news I have received while being here at DU is mostly from the New York Times or from the radio in my car. I really like the New York Times online because in my opinion it has the most wide variety of news articles and they are so easily accessible. If I want to learn something about the national budget being approved, all I would have to do is type in the search bar National Budget and hundreds of articles would come up. Also, because the New York Times is such a well know and respected paper I feel that all the articles that I am reading are true and fact checked. The other way I get the news, on the radio, provides me not with the little stories but only the most pressing ones. I don't drive much therefor I only get some news this way but it is usually a very important topic. For example, when hurricane Sandy was hitting the east coast I had no idea that it was happening. I only found out that this major event was going on because I heard about it on the radio in my car. College in a way has kept me from the news, while yes I know about the large events like hurricane Sandy, I know just about nothing else about our country and I really need to start trying to read and watch the news more often so I can be well informed about what is happening in the country.

Reading through many blogs of our fellow students, the New York Times seems to be a very common theme in where we get our news. But I agree with you that the college lifestyle has, in part, hindered me to keep up with current events and requires me to be much more active in being informed about the world around me.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that college keeps you so busy that it seems like there is not enough time in the day to get everything you need to get done, done, let alone take time to catch up with what is going on in the world. Also, I like that you are interesting in really broad topics like the national budget and things that affect everyone versus little stories about small town happenings. Sometimes I feel like those stories are solely about victims in crimes in neighborhoods and cities, and although tragic, knowing each case of injustice in small cities doesn't really benefit anyone.
